This weekend, Sir Paul McCartney was awarded yet another honor, the French Legion of Honour. The country’s highest public honor is typically reserved for French nationals for their service in the military or government, but McCartney won praise from French President François Hollande with compliments involving the age-old match-ups of the Beatles vs. the Stones and McCartney vs. Lennon, The Guardian reports.
So how did Macca celebrate? By rocking out, of course. As the Guardian also reports, McCartney took the Eurostar train from Paris to London right after the presentation of the French Legion of Honour on Saturday (September 8th), then hopped (proverbially) on the Africa Express as a surprise guest. NME reports that McCartney performed Wings hits “Coming Up” and “Goodnight Tonight” at the closing night concert for Africa Express, the concert tour held on a moving train traveling across the UK. The tour helped celebrate the Olympics and Paralympics, and featured many of Africa’s biggest music stars. Watch McCartney and co.’s truly epic jam of “Goodnight Tonight” below.
McCartney performed with, among others, Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, members of indie band Super Furry Animals, and Damon Albarn, Blur/Gorillaz leader and a co-founder of Africa Express. Apparently the stage could not contain all of Sir Paul’s jamming: Watch below, as McCartney jams backstage with the Noisettes frontwoman Shingai Shoniwa and violinist Marques Toliver.
