[lastfm]The Cure[/lastfm] released Disintegration 23 years ago today. It is widely considered their greatest album, but [lastfm]Robert Smith[/lastfm] says it made the band “everything that I didn’t want us to become: a stadium rock band.” Smith deliberately wanted to write an album that was depressing. What was his inspiration?

[lastfm]Robert Smith[/lastfm] was about to turn 30 years old and was depressed and frightened by this fact. He felt all the masterpieces in rock and roll had been completed well before the band members reached such an age.
