The 90′s was an important decade for music. Yes, the first movement that comes to mind is grunge. But that was only the spice. Yes, it was powerful spice, but it was just that. The decade’s meat and potatoes was comprised of a constant string of hits from bands such as Everclear, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, Marcy Playground and the like.
Alternative rock radio stations saw their biggest popularity during this period. The 90′s were so big for rock that Top 40 stations siphoned off many of the genre’s biggest singles.
After Everclear’s Sparkle and Fade album was certified platinum, the band went on to continue solidifying their place in rock with hit after hit. Although Sugar Ray had early hopes of breaking through a hard rock act, the band found overwhelming success with its slower, catchier melodies like “Fly.” Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy,” Marcy Playground’s “Sex And Candy” and Gin Blossoms “Hey Jealousy” are still spun in regular rotation today at alternative rock radio.
Listen to Steve Craig’s interview with Art Alexakis from Everclear and Mark McGrath from Sugar Ray:
The four bands have announced a tour that promises to be one of the summer’s most energetic and nostalgic. Kicking off June 28th in Saratoga, CA, the Summerland Tour will hit more than 25 U.S. cities, most at major arenas.
