Will Chase From Smash Promises Lots of Twists and Turns
If you haven’t yet caught Smash, let us update you: it’s a new musical drama on NBC, produced by Steven Spielberg, and featuring Will & Grace’s Debra Messing and Angelica Huston. Mara caught up with one of the show’s actors, Broadway’s Will Chase, who plays actor Michael Swift, an old flame of Debra Messing’s character, cast in the play-within-a-TV-show as Joe DiMaggio.
[photogallerylink id=92825 align=right]Chase’s most recent TV appearances include a Hallmark Channel movie, “The Lost Valentine,” which he filmed here in Atlanta. He also enjoyed our fair city when he came through with the tour of Miss Saigon.
Mara admitted to being a huge fan of the show and asked him about the conflict that his character is bringing to the storyline. “It’s messy and it makes good drama and good television.” he said. “You want to root for people you don’t necessarily want to root for. And I’ve always enjoyed playing those kind of characters, too.”
Famous for Broadway shows such as Rent, Lennon and Billy Elliot, Chase is starting to get recognized outside of the theater district. “I walk into a Starbucks I’ve never been into and a guy goes, ‘Hey, good luck on the show, it’s great’ and I’m like, oh my God, why are YOU watching it, you’ve got a construction hat on…”
Guest appearances, like Nick Jonas in one episode, have helped make Smash NBC’s #1 drama in Adults 18-49 and total viewers. Chase is filming the final episode of the first season now and promises lots of twists and turns.
