This week’s Perfect 9@9 guest host is Martha-Jane Archer and her theme is “Songs I’ll Never Stop Listening To.”

I heard “You Are a Tourist” at a very pivotal time in my life. You see, I’m from Cartersville. Don’t get me wrong, Cartersville is a great place to raise your kids but once you get to a certain age I think pretty much everyone kind of wants to watch the town burn some days. The first time it came on Dave FM, I was having one of those days of overwhelming negativity. I felt trapped in this little city, and then BOOM! Sitting outside of my doctor’s office, here comes this gem by Death Cab and it completely turned around my day. I connected to the lyrics in a way I haven’t in a long time and its been a favorite of mine ever since. Martha-Jane

Where The Band Got Its Name

[photogallerylink id=82034 align=right]“Death Cab for Cutie” is the title of a song used in the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Beatles[/lastfm]‘ film, Magical Mystery Tour. Written by Vivian Stanshall and Neil Innes, it was performed by the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band[/lastfm] in 1967.

But even Innes did not make that up. He got it from the title of an old pulp fiction crime magazine. The source may go back even further — in 1957, author Richard Hoggart used it in his book, The Uses of Literacy, where he talked about sex-and-violence novels, and he listed some samples of possible titles these books may have, such as “Sweetheart, Curves Can Kill,” “The Lady Takes a Dive,” and “Death-Cab for Cutie.”
